Skyrim Social-Consequence Mod Prior Art, v2¶
Third independent research pass on the same ground as 15-skyrim-social-reactivity-mods.md (itself a merge of two reports) — same naming pattern as 08-social-sim-literature-v2.md relative to 02. This report reaches the same top-line conclusion as 15 (no shipped mod does per-NPC belief-with- provenance propagation) independently, and is filed separately rather than merged into 15 because it surfaces enough distinct evidence — specific mods 15 doesn't cover, and hard vote/download numbers — to be worth keeping traceable to its own source rather than blended in.
What's genuinely new here (not in report 15)¶
- [BUILD-ON] The first shipped implementation of actual NPC-to-NPC rumor propagation: SkyrimNet's community plugin IntelEngine. Report 15 covers SkyrimNet's World Knowledge system but not this plugin. Per this report, IntelEngine ships "gossip chains that propagate between NPCs," NPCs traveling on foot across cells/holds to scheduled meetings, and off-screen faction-war developments feeding quest generation. This is worth flagging distinctly from generic "LLM NPCs have memory" claims in the earlier report — propagation between NPCs (not just NPC-recalls- player-history) is specifically what Chronicle's own core mechanic is. Caveat: the payload is still textual/LLM-generated — it colors dialogue, it does not appear to re-drive AI packages or disposition ranks (this report explicitly notes SkyrimNet's own "Current Limitations" admit vanilla dialogue trees bypass the system entirely).
- [DESIGN-INPUT] Skyrim Town Criers (2025) is the shipped precedent for "one fact, framed differently per audience." Not covered in report
- Criers in four major cities announce hold-spun news — the same event propagandized differently depending on the local Jarl's political alignment, using 3,600+ AI-voiced (ElevenLabs) vanilla-timbre lines, with message pools keyed to quest progress and player decisions. This is one-to-many broadcast, not NPC-to-NPC propagation or mutation — but it's a concrete, well-received (2025) proof that per-region framing of a single canonical fact is a shipped, praised idea, and that AI-voiced lines in a vanilla NPC's own timbre is now an accepted production technique worth budgeting for on Chronicle's dialogue-surfacing layer.
- [BUILD-ON] NPC Reactions (kuertee, LE 2015) is a genuine, under-cited precedent for per-NPC memory with a decay timer — absent from report 15 entirely. NPCs react to worn faction gear/clothing/location and, critically, "remember you for 24 hours (or a month if wearing Dark Brotherhood gear)" — a configurable per-reaction memory timer (24h/720h defaults, up to a year). This is a real, if primitive, per-NPC provenance-adjacent memory model that predates every LLM framework by eight years. It died from the Papyrus wall it was built on: on-the-fly proximity evaluation caused visible latency (a literal "…" placeholder response while the mod "was still evaluating") and Oldrim-era stack dumps; no SE port ever appeared.
- [DESIGN-INPUT] A second, independently-stated design-thesis quote for "witnessed, not global" belief. Report 15 makes this point via Skyrim Reputation's telepathic framing. This report adds a sharper, independent citation: a 2019 Master of Disguise troubleshooting thread calls out that faction-armor identification "marking you forever as part of the Necromancer faction… is a terrible mechanic. It should not kick-in until you have interacted with NPCs… And it should never have a permanently global effect." That's Chronicle's provenance thesis restated as a bug report, independently of the Skyrim Reputation critique already filed.
- [BUILD-ON] Concrete technique: script-free GMST-only behavior improvement (RAID) as a zero-cost baseline. Realistic AI Detection reworks the detection formula via 45 game-setting tweaks alone — no scripts, no save footprint, no persistence — and materially improves perceived NPC intelligence. Filed as a data point on how much can be bought before any scripted/external-process layer is needed at all; relevant to scoping Chronicle's in-engine footprint down to the minimum.
- [RISK — quantified] The community demand and the propagation gap are now dated and countable, not just characterized. This report supplies a timeline table (2015 → 2025) of recurring, stably-phrased wishlist threads, and one hard data point report 15 doesn't have: a 2024 r/skyrimmods thread asking "Are there any npc gossip mod?" drew exactly one substantive answer ("Denizens of Morthal is the only one I know of") — a striking gap given the thread's age and the topic's popularity elsewhere in the sub.
- [BUILD-ON] SPID's transience is confirmed by the developer directly, with a cleaner citation than report 15's: powerofthree's own forum answer states "SPID distribution is transient — when you close the game all changes from SPID are gone… There is no way to make it persistent since it's the way SPID is designed to operate." Free of save bloat precisely because it stores nothing — the same persistence/transience zero-sum report 15 identifies, cited to the primary source.
- [DESIGN-INPUT] Explicit five-wall taxonomy, distinct framing from report 15's. This report separates the walls slightly differently: (1) Papyrus VM throughput, (2) save bloat / orphaned scripts, (3) no off-screen execution (AI/scripts simply do not run for unloaded actors — not a performance problem, an absence of execution), (4) the voice/audio binding (every reactive line needs recorded audio in that NPC's specific voice — the reason for splicing, silent-voice hacks, or paid AI voice generation), (5) the persistence/transience zero-sum (SPID-style injection is free but forgets; save-resident state remembers but bloats). Wall 3 is worth treating as categorically different from 1/2 in any ADR text: it's not a workaround-with-effort problem, it's a "the engine will not run this NPC's logic at all" problem, which report 15's index/build-on lists already independently flag via the NPC AI Process Position Fix mod but don't state this starkly.
Not repeated here¶
Everything else in this report (Skyrim Reputation as global/telepathic, Shadow of Skyrim as bounded per-nemesis and patent-shaped, the crime-overhaul witness lineage, GDO/RDO as the proven cheap condition-gated surfacing pattern, Immersive Citizens/AI Overhaul as package-stack re-driving rather than simulation, the "NPCs talk but nothing changes" reception pattern around Mantella/CHIM/SkyrimNet) substantially overlaps report 15's findings and isn't re-filed here to avoid duplication — see 15 for that ground, cited to its own two sources.
Caveats (from this report's own methodology note)¶
- Reddit thread bodies were retrieved via search-index snippets, not by opening Reddit pages directly in this report's research environment; quotes are what the index returned, marked as paraphrase where the report itself couldn't confirm exact wording. Thread URLs are preserved in the source file for direct verification if a claim becomes load-bearing.
- Oldrim-era (2011–2015) "impossible" claims about Papyrus predate mature SKSE64/po3 Papyrus Extender/JContainers/SPID/Skyrim Platform and should be read as "hard," not "impossible," for SE/AE — consistent with report 15's same caveat.
