Skyrim Quest & GM-Injection Machinery, v2

Second independent pass on the same ground as 19-skyrim-quest-injection-machinery.md, from a combined report whose Part II ("Prompt B") covers Skyrim's own machinery. The report's Part I (general drama-management field) is filed separately as comparative-systems/ai-directors-and-drama-management-v2.md. Same naming pattern as 17/18 relative to 15/16. Reaches the same top-line conclusions as 19 independently (Story Manager is a dispatcher over hand-authored templates, not a generator; journal/objective text is static-record-only; a GM layer must inject through the engine's narrowest doors) and adds enough new, precise detail — the actual hardcoded event code list, the alias-storage token mechanics, and a much deeper IntelEngine profile — to file separately rather than blend in.

What's genuinely new here (not in report 19)

  • [BUILD-ON] The Story Manager's event vocabulary is fixed, hardcoded, and enumerable — this report names the actual codes. ~30 event types total (SMEN record): ADCR (crime gold), ADIA (actor dialogue), AIPL (player add item), ARRT (arrest), ASSU (assault), BRIB, CAST, CHRR (relationship rank change), CLOC (change location), CRFT, CURE, DEAD (dead body), ESJA, FLAT, INFC, INTM, JAIL, KILL, LEVL, LOCK, NVPE, PFIN, PRFV, REMP, QSTR, SCPT (script event), SKIL, STIJ, TRES — some present in code but unused. There is no plugin mechanism to register a new event type. Mods can only react through this fixed list, through SCPT script events, through SKSE's separate ModEvent system (RegisterForModEvent, requiring re-registration after every load), or by polling. This is a sharper, more citable version of report 19's "SKSE can trigger existing nodes but cannot alter the compiled quest tree" finding — worth using this exact code list if an ADR ever needs to state precisely what Chronicle's GM layer can and cannot listen for natively.
  • [BUILD-ON] Alias fill mechanics, with the load-bearing spatial constraint made explicit. Fill types: specific/forced reference, unique actor, external alias, location-alias reference, created object, Find Matching Reference (with Closest/Near-Alias modifiers), and From Event (binds an alias directly to the actor/item/location passed in the triggering event's data). Only persistent references and unique actors can be found outside the loaded area — this is the specific engine-level reason radiant quests cluster near the player, not merely a design choice. A quest form can also only run one instance at a time, which is why Missives needed 264 separate quest records (courier/gather/kill/retrieve/hunt × variants × holds) rather than one parametrized quest — a concrete, quantified cost of the "generation is template-selection-only" ceiling report 19 already states more abstractly.
  • [RISK — sharpened] Journal/objective text mechanics, with the actual API surface and its caveats. SetObjectiveDisplayed(index) only toggles display of a pre-authored objective by integer index — there is no API to create a new journal entry with arbitrary runtime text. The only text-injection mechanism is token replacement: <Alias=AliasName> resolves from filled aliases, and aliases flagged Stores Text / Uses Stored Text can propagate display-name strings between aliases and into book text (the actual mechanism vanilla uses for "Kill the leader of <Alias=Location>"-style radiant text). Documented failure modes: an unfilled alias renders as a literal [...] in the UI; stored text doesn't survive alias clearing unless the storage choreography is exactly right; and the community's "Dynamic Book Entries" workaround (dummy misc items whose display names are rewritten by script, force-filled into stores-text aliases) tops out at 259 characters per entry, one alias+item pair per paragraph variant. This is a harder, more specific ceiling than report 19's framing — any Chronicle GM output destined for the native journal must be authored as short, token-slotted template text ("<Alias.ShortName=QuestGiver> believes you killed <Alias.ShortName=Victim>"), not generated prose.
  • [BUILD-ON] IntelEngine's architecture profile is substantially deeper here than in report 19 — three explicit layers: (1) a native C++ SKSE plugin that indexes every actor/location in the actual load order at game-load (no hardcoded lists — mod-added inns are dispatchable), resolves natural-language destinations via door Z-axis scanning and Levenshtein-tolerant name search, and polls positions for stuck/departure detection; (2) Papyrus scripts running a 5-slot concurrent task state machine with dual persistence (runtime arrays + PapyrusUtil StorageUtil); (3) SkyrimNet YAML actions plus an Inja-templated prompt layer injecting six awareness blocks per NPC (current task, schedule, meeting outcomes, received messages, known facts with natural time references and expiry, gossip network). Faction Politics v3.0 (newer than report 19's source) adds a political DM on a 6-hour tick generating trade deals, espionage, border skirmishes, assassinations, war declarations, and surrenders across nine factions, with faction quests unlocking at standing 20+ and outcomes feeding back into war state. Gossip chains specifically propagate between up to 10 NPCs and trace to real events — a concrete bound where report 19 said only "gossip chains" generically.
  • [RISK] IntelEngine's precisely-named limitation: no symbolic source of truth under the LLM. This report states the gap sharply: "IntelEngine's 'known facts' are LLM-written memories, not simulation state" — i.e. even its most sophisticated competitor lacks exactly the belief/claim/ variant layer Chronicle already commits to. Also new: action-space conflicts are a first-class hazard, not a footnote — SkyrimNet presents all registered actions to the model regardless of which mod registered them, so overlapping mods produce duplicate "go to location" actions with mismatched cancel semantics, requiring manual per-YAML enabled: flags to resolve. Presentation is deliberately not the engine journal at all — a PrismaUI React overlay (Tasks/Story Engine/Director/Packages tabs) is the primary UI, with MCM as fallback, because debugging emergent dispatches through the vanilla journal UI is "impossible."
  • [DESIGN-INPUT] Two more faction-response mods, with sharper documented fragility than report 19's coverage. Civil War Overhaul (ApolloDown, Open Civil War's predecessor) tied battle odds to a persistent "Murder Mayhem score" (soldiers previously killed) and scripted enemy counter-attacks on the player's cities days after a loss, delivered via courier — an early resource-accumulation feedback loop, "famously script-fragile," and abandoned after an Anniversary Edition update broke it. Faction Warfare ties 14 joinable factions' daily simulated gold income directly to warfare events (ambushes, hunting parties, reinforcements); player kills push a faction's gold negative and starve its events, donations raise reputation, and faction armories visibly re-equip player-donated gear onto members (1/3 of base value returning to faction coffers) — a fully closed escalation/retaliation loop surfaced entirely through spawns and notifications, no journal integration at all. Notably, its own author has since retired it in favor of a successor mod (Lawbringer), citing that mod's advancement past Faction Warfare's approach — direct evidence that even a successful resource-loop faction sim gets superseded, and that spawn-injection tuning (not the underlying simulation) is where these mods' maintenance burden concentrates.
  • [RISK] Community reception draws a sharp line between bad implementation and bad concept for radiant/generated content — a distinction sharper than report 19's "blandness vector" framing. The defense of Skyrim's own radiant system over Fallout 4's: Skyrim's were optional epilogues gated behind completed questlines (opt-in "dessert"), while Fallout 4 made them mandatory main-path content disguised as real quests ("this deceptive move lead me… to being offended"). Missives' reception shows the acceptable band precisely: mundane generated errands are enjoyed when opt-in, disclosed up front (destination and difficulty), quitable, hold-local, and lightly consequential (a bounty on failure) — "when they behave like a job board rather than a plot." Actionable rule for a future Chronicle GM layer: generated content is forgiven for being simple, never for being pointless, deceptive, or inescapable — and the fastest route to "pointless" is content whose cause doesn't exist anywhere in tracked simulation state, which is exactly what Chronicle's provenance requirement already guards against by construction.

Caveats

  • Single-source addition; no independent verification of the exact SMEN event-code list or the 259-character Dynamic Book Entries figure was performed by this session.
  • IntelEngine's Faction Politics v3.0 details are newer than this project's report 19 source and may continue to change rapidly — this is an actively-developed community plugin, not a stable spec.
